Resource Packs vs Behavior Packs in Minecraft Bedrock

Resource packs affect how the game looks and sounds. Behavior packs define certain gameplay data and rules. A Bedrock add-on may combine both, but they are not interchangeable.

Original educational diagram: resource packs contain visual and audio assets; behavior packs contain gameplay data such as recipes and entity behaviors.

Resource packs

Resource packs can provide textures, sounds, models, animations and other presentation assets. A change to a texture does not necessarily alter a creature's behavior.

Behavior packs

Behavior packs can contain definitions for entity behaviors, loot tables, recipes and spawn rules. They may reference resource packs when custom visual assets are needed.

modules.type = "data"

Why can an add-on need both?

A custom creature can have new graphics supplied by a resource pack and new behavior supplied by a behavior pack. The creator's dependencies and supported game version still matter. A valid file structure cannot guarantee gameplay compatibility.

MCpack and MCAddon are package formats

The official Minecraft file-extension reference describes .mcpack as a ZIP-packaged resource or behavior pack. An .mcaddon is a ZIP container that can contain pack files. An .mcworld represents a world. File extensions alone do not establish safety, validity or compatibility.

What does manifest.json tell you?

A typical pack's manifest.json includes a header with identification and version information and modules describing the contents. Resource modules commonly use "resources", and behavior modules commonly use "data". Dependencies and manifest-format versions have additional rules; use the current official documentation rather than assuming one sample covers every Bedrock release.

Importing does not activate a world pack

An imported pack can still need to be enabled for a world under Resource Packs or Behavior Packs. Some add-ons require matching packs. These steps vary by platform and Minecraft version. The Android and iPhone/iPad installation guides remain unpublished pending physical device checks.

Bedrock add-ons are not Java mods

Java Edition mod packages such as .jar files cannot simply be opened as Bedrock .mcpack or .mcaddon files. Check the edition and compatibility notes before downloading or sharing a pack.
